Tunnel Water Proofing with Mirai WPM-PVC MEMBRANE (Complying to BIS 15909:2020)
Package 2 includes the construction of a 14.6 km-long railway line and a 12.6 km-long tunnel which is part of The Rishikesh–Karnaprayag line is a 126 km long under-construction railway line, which will run from Rishikesh railway station in Rishikesh to Karnaprayag in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand state of India. It is the main feeder route to Indian Railways' Char Dham Railway project which aims to connect the Char Dham pilgrimage shrines of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath. As part of an Indian geostrategic initiative to build infrastructure along the India-China border to discourage Chinese expansion, this rail line is of national strategic importance, hence it is being tracked on the Central Government’s PRAGATI (Pro Active Governance and Timely Implementation) portal.
- Main Client: RVNL (Rail Vikas Nigam Limited)
RVNL is a Navratna public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Railways, established in 2003. It specializes in transportation infrastructure development and fast-track implementation of railway projects. - Main Contractor: L&T (Larsen & Toubro)
L&T is a leader in engineering, construction, and technology, and one of India’s largest private-sector enterprises. - PMC: Yuksel Proje
Yuksel Proje which was formed in 1978 is providing engineering, design and construction supervision services in more than 30 countries.
According to the data of ENR News Record Yüksel Proje is steadily rising in the list of the largest 225 design companies in the world, and maintains its place as one of the companies at the top of Türkiye's largest exporters list.
RVNL and L&T faced significant challenges in identifying a reliable waterproofing solution with a 100-year of lifespan for the tunnels in Package 2 of the Rishikesh–Karnaprayag Railway project.
Despite extensive efforts, no other provider was able to deliver a solution that met the technical and performance requirements of this critical infrastructure.
Recognizing the complexity of the project, we proposed an innovative and robust waterproofing system tailored to their specific needs. Our solution incorporated a state-of-the-art PVC membrane designed to have a lifespan of 100 years, ensuring long-term durability and reliability. This approach not only addressed their concerns but also instilled confidence in our capabilities, leading RVNL and L&T to entrust us with the waterproofing responsibilities for Package 2 Tunnel.
This milestone highlights our commitment to engineering excellence, problem-solving, and providing customized solutions for challenging projects.
We provided RVNL and L&T with a Pressure Release Waterproofing System specifically designed for tunnel construction. The system comprises:
- PVC Membrane (Mirai WPM, 2.0 mm thick): A robust waterproofing layer offering long-lasting protection against water ingress and structural deterioration.
- Geotextile (MIRAI GTX500, 500 GSM): A high-strength, non-woven polypropylene geotextile that enhances drainage and protects the membrane from damage during installation and operation.
PVC membrane waterproofing is particularly effective in tunnels constructed using methods like NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method), which often encounter high-pressure aquifers. These membranes act as barriers against water intrusion, preventing corrosion and deterioration, ensuring long-term durability.
Project Statistics:
- Total area to be waterproofed in our scope : 1.5 lac sqm
- Total amount of MIRAI GTX used : 1.5 lac sqm
- Total amount of MIRAI WPM used : 1.5 lac sqm
- Types of tunnels : Railway Tunnel
- System installed as per DVS 2212 guidelines by trained and certified PVC welders.
